How to Wash Your Grepp Handlebar Tape

Keeping your Grepp reusable handlebar tape clean is key to maintaining its grippiness, comfort, and durability for many rides to come. Woven from high-quality, reusable materials, Grepp Gripper bar tape is designed to handle the dirt, sweat, and everything in between. Here’s a step-by-step guide to removing, washing, and re-wrapping your Grepp reusable  bar tape so it looks and feels like new.

As a general disclaimer the handlebar and particular sweat is an aggressive medium over time. For very light colours you might not get all the dirt out when washing.

What You’ll Need:

  • Tire lever or anything blunt and thin (for removing the bar end plug)
  • Washing bag (to protect your reusable bar tape)
  • Washing detergent (without softener contents)
  • Washing machine (set to maximum 40°C)

1. Remove Your Handlebar Tape

First, grab your tire lever to remove the bar end plug. Find a small gap between the end of the bar and the plug, gently insert the lever, and pry open enough space to pull out the plug completely. Make sure to store the plug somewhere you’ll remember for easy reinstallation later.

2. Unwrapping the Tape

Now it’s time to unwrap your Grepp bar tape. Start by pushing back the brake hoods for easy access. Then, find the electrical tape at the top of the handlebar, where the wrap begins (only if you wrapped from the drops to the tops) .. Thanks to Grepp’s non-adhesive back, you’ll notice there’s no sticky residue left behind—just clean, smooth handlebars.

3. Preparing to Wash

Place your Grepp woven handlebar tape in a washing bag to protect the ends from fraying and to preserve the tape’s integrity. You can skip the washing  bag if you have sealed off the open ends with instant glue. Set the washing machine to max 40°C for a gentle wash cycle. (Pro tip: This is also a great time to wash the pads from your helmet if they need a freshen-up!)

4. After Washing

Once the washing cycle is complete, take the handlebar tape out of the washing bag and let it air dry on a drying rack. You’ll be amazed at how much cleaner and fresher it looks!

5. Re-Wrapping the Tape

When the tape is fully dry, it’s ready to go back on your handlebars! Need a refresher on how to wrap it just right? Check out our How to Wrap Handlebar Tape blog post or video for a quick tutorial here
